Taos Opera Institute

Through national auditions, Cassandra was accepted into the 2013 Taos Opera Institute, a pre-professional summer opera training program in the beautiful Taos Ski Valley of New Mexico.   This program is "designed to bridge the gap between academia and apprenticeships for the emerging young vocal artist."  During the month of June, she enjoyed dramatic training, language coaching, special sessions addressing performance strategies and psychology, master classes lead by esteemed guest artists, and daily fitness and strength training (including yoga, zumba, strenghth training and hiking).  She performed in weekly aria recitals, a final scenes program, and a masterclass with Kathleen Clawson. This program signifies a crucial step in her artistic development and will help prepare her for success as a singer.

Cassandra also was awarded a $2000 Artist Grant from the International Festival Society to apply towards tuition for the Taos Opera Institute.

"Elijah" by Felix Mendelssohn

On March 17, 2013 San Jose Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Maestro Leroy Kromm, performed Felix Mendelssohn's acclaimed oratorio, Elijah, in downtown San Jose's beautiful California Theatre. The 135-voice choir was joined joined by Peter Tuff, baritone, ("...a burnished and expressive singer..." Richard Scheinin) singing the role of Elijah, and Bay Area favorite and Opera San Jose alumnus Christopher Bengochea, tenor, as Obadiah.  The performance also featured Yemonja Stanley, soprano, Cassandra Cárdenas, mezzo soprano, members of Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose, and the Nova Vista Symphony.

Mendelssohn's operatic setting of the Old Testament story about the prophet Elijah was heralded as both a critical and popular success from its very first performance on August 26, 1846 in Birmingham, England. Melodious, dramatic and reminiscent of works by J.S. Bach and George F. Handel, both of whom Mendelssohn idolized, it remains one of the world's most beloved oratorios.

The Necklace, by Thomas Conroy

See the Gallery for photos of The Necklace.

Cassandra worked closely with faculty composer Dr. Tom Conroy on his revision of his original work, The Necklace, based on the short story by Guy de Maupassant. Cassandra sang the lead role of Mathilde, the pretty and charming, but dissatisfied wife of a clerk, who attempts to escape her own destiny by borrowing her friend's treasured necklace to attend a ball. When the necklace goes missing, her life with her husband is changed forever. See the Gallery for photos of the performance.
